La Morenita – Phase II
A Mexican Story Expanded
One wall became a larger world.
Following the original La Morenita mural, JD Art returned to Edmonton’s Alberta Avenue to continue transforming the property through La Morenita Phase II, an expansive new mural celebrating Mexican culture, beauty, landscape and symbolism.
At the centre is a smiling señorita wearing traditional Día de los Muertos-inspired makeup. Rather than presenting the figure as dark or sombre, she appears joyful and alive, surrounded by an environment filled with colour, nature and cultural references.
Behind her, the landscape opens into Mexico.
A monumental Aztec calendar anchors the composition alongside a Mexican pyramid and distant mountain ranges. Poppies and roses move throughout the foreground, softening the monumental imagery with natural colour and detail.
Above, the mural transitions into the sky.
The sun and moon create a meeting between day and night, with detailed facial features bringing character to the moon. Northern lights stretch through the darker side of the composition, introducing a surreal element into an otherwise culturally grounded landscape.
And overlooking the scene is one of the mural’s strongest symbols: an eagle carrying a rattlesnake, directly referencing the iconic imagery at the centre of the Mexican flag.
Realism, landscape, portraiture, symbolism and imagination are layered together across the wall, allowing individual details to reveal themselves as the viewer moves through the piece.
Phase II doesn’t replace the original La Morenita mural.
It expands its world.
Together with the original artwork and the Pink Hot Cactus Neon Wall, the project continues turning La Morenita into a recognizable piece of public art along Edmonton’s Alberta Avenue.
