Community & Culture | Samosa House Mural

Edmonton Mural Festival × JD Art | Alberta Avenue, Edmonton

Different cultures. Shared connections. One promise.

Marking his 30th mural project, award-winning Edmonton artist Jamelle Davis, professionally known as JD Art, created Community & Culture, a large-scale exterior mural at Samosa House on Edmonton’s historic Alberta Avenue.

Developed through Edmonton Mural Festival and the Alberta Avenue Business Association, the artwork celebrates cultural identity, unity and the connections that bring people together along 118 Avenue.

At the centre of the composition, two hands meet in a pinky promise. One features intricate henna-inspired patterns and black-and-grey realism, while the other is built from bold geometric shapes. Together, they symbolize individuality, trust and the beauty of different cultures coming together.

Flowing across the building are oversized, sculptural ribbons carrying the words CULTURE, 118 AVE and COMMUNITY. Through dramatic shadows, dimensional folds and carefully constructed perspective, the painted fabrics appear to extend beyond the wall, creating a striking 3D optical illusion.

A basket of samosas, floral details, symbolic textiles, a coastal landscape and architectural elements bring additional layers of cultural storytelling into the design. The ribbons wrap around the building’s edges, connecting the artwork with the architecture itself.

More than a decorative mural, Community & Culture transforms an everyday exterior into a visual celebration of belonging, cultural exchange and neighbourhood identity.

Thirty mural projects. One continuing mission: transforming spaces through art.
