HOMEGROWN
Alley Kat × JD Art × Red Shed Malting
Local art. Local ingredients. Homegrown identity.
Homegrown is a collaborative beer and can design created with Alley Kat Brewing and Red Shed Malting, bringing JD Art’s visual language from large-scale walls onto a product designed to be held, shared, and experienced.
At the centre of the can is a Black woman portrayed through a fusion of black-and-white portraiture and vibrant colour. The two treatments merge across the composition, reflecting the contrast between realism and abstraction that appears throughout JD Art’s larger body of work.
Her hand forms JD Art’s signature “I See Peace” gesture. A peace sign positioned over the eye. It acts as both a recognizable visual motif and a message: seeing the world through peace, creativity, and perspective.
Look closer and the design reveals another layer.
Hidden throughout the can are JD Art’s signature hearts and visual Easter eggs, rewarding anyone who spends a little more time with the artwork. These small details connect the packaging directly to the symbols found throughout JD Art murals, canvases, and other creative projects.
Why “Homegrown”?
The name carries particular meaning.
As an artist whose creative career has been shaped in Edmonton, Homegrown became an opportunity to celebrate the city, its creative community, and the businesses and people building something of their own here.
The collaboration brings together local brewing, local malt, and local art in one object, transforming the beer can itself into a miniature canvas.
More than packaging, Homegrown demonstrates how JD Art’s work can move between murals, fine art, branding, and consumer products while maintaining a recognizable identity.
Made here. Created here. Homegrown. August 2026
