A traditional Persian rug transformed into a one-of-one contemporary artwork.
JD Art hand-painted a large-scale monochromatic female portrait directly into the existing rug, allowing the original Persian floral patterns and ornamental details to remain visible through the figure. From a distance, the portrait commands the piece. Up close, the face dissolves back into the intricate patterns, textures and history of the rug beneath it.
The result exists somewhere between fine art, textile art and functional object, challenging the traditional relationship between artwork and its canvas.
Rather than covering the original design, JD Art worked with it. Existing flowers, borders and decorative motifs travel directly through the portrait, creating moments where realism and traditional pattern become inseparable.
The piece has also been displayed within Esfahan Persian Rugs, placing the contemporary portrait back into an environment surrounded by the traditional craft that inspired its foundation.
About the Artist
Jamelle Davis, known professionally as JD Art, is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist and muralist based in Alberta. His work moves between large-scale public murals, portraiture, canvas, installation, brand collaborations and unconventional surfaces.
